Humble Pie isn't a terribly flashy wow-trendy kind of place, but a humbler version of one. something that meets my fickle foodie standards. I'm typically a TripAdvisor best-reviewed restaurant hopper kind of girl.-always looking for. This is coming from someone who had previously never had a favorite. I live in Raleigh and even I have been surprised that this restaurant has become my favorite. We went to Raleigh Times afterwards for dinner which was GREAT and totally turned our night around. We voiced our concerns to our waitress who which just handed us our check.

They had said they subbed them because they ran out of wontons? We weren’t aware of this substitution before the dish was brought to the table. The “tuna tartare” was the consistency of canned tuna with stale and I mean really stale tortilla chips. My boyfriend eats just about anything and couldn’t even finish it. The “short ribs” were like a beef stew with mash potatoes with an awful after taste. The pork belly sliders were one piece of meat so thin it was like bacon on a large bun. It was by far the worst restaurant we have ever eaten at. both laughing at how this restaurant could have possibly made it on. Needless to say, after our “dinner”, we were. We looked up the best restaurants in downtown and this one landed on the list. My boyfriend and I visited Raleigh for the weekend and we always try to do some research before we start our trip. With all the great restaurants in the Raleigh area this is not one that we will return to. The server left the menu behind for those who wanted to order more food.

The entrees that we did get were delicious. The salad ($10.00) could not be shared by more than 2 people. The steak tacos ($24.00) were three of the smallest tacos I have seen. The bread order ($4.00) was 2 slices of bread cut in half. Our server explained the a la carte menu to us and told us that the portions were large enough to be shared by the dinner guests. When we left an hour later 25% were still empty. At that time, there were over a dozen available tables, but we were told that the area was full. This fact we discovered last evening at 6:00pm. Reservations are done by email, but if you want to dine in the covered outdoor patio. We selected Humble Pie as it was listed as one of the best places to eat outside in Raleigh. There is parking available in an adjacent lot after 6:00pm. We would not return to this Humble Pie based on today’s experience. We passed the Parkside Restaurant on our way to Humble Pie and wished we had tried that restaurant for brunch instead. The shrimp in my shrimp and grits had not been deveined and I was crunching through them the entire time. My wife’s eggs were undercooked and spewed clear gelatinous uncooked whites. This may have been the first time I have been charged for iced tea refills below the Mason-Dixon line.

We were subsequently shocked to find out that refills were not free so we were charged for a total of four 2 dollar iced teas. We both got unsweetened iced tea to drink. An order of two small biscuits was brought to us as a starter. We ordered shrimp and grits and a Humble Breakfast (the latter consisting of two “over medium” eggs, grits, and a side of bacon). When we sat down and read the menus, the item from the online menu that we had hoped to order (biscuits with sausage gravy) was no longer on the menu. We showed up the next morning and they had no reservation for us, but they accommodated us, thankfully. We emailed the restaurant the day before to get a reservation and received an automatic reply that stated they would get back to us.
